What is garden compost?
Garden compost is organic material which has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment. It’s a key ingredient in organic farming; to gardeners, compost is considered “black gold” for its many great benefits in the garden.
Garden compost can be made with a variety of organic materials such as leaves, grass clipping, kitchen scraps from plants and eggshells.
Nature creates compost by itself without any help. But gardeners can create their own composting process with optimal conditions for decomposition, which include four basic ingredients: air, water, carbon and nitrogen, in addition to the organic matter.
1. Cold compost, which requires minimum effort and involvement
2. Hot compost, which requires a lot of effort and involvement
If you ‘re considering making your own garden compost, Scott Meyer, editor of Organic Gardening magazine, offers a great step-by-step walk-through of the composting process basics in the video above.
