heatstroke preventionOur Saturday green news bring you the latest on health, parenting and cool baby and kids products.

  • National Heatstroke Prevention Day is observed on July 31st. Just about every 10 days a child dies from heatstroke after being left alone in a hot vehicle. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle fatality for children under 14. Yet these tragedies are completely preventable. This year the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is encouraging the public community to help raise awareness about the dangers of kids and cars through a concerted daylong social media conversation, so get involved and spread the word! For specific location check out the Heat stroke danger map.
  • Bloomberg’s Obesity Fight Goes to Another Level: Up the stairs! Mayor Bloomberg just announced his next step in fighting obesity in NYC where obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death, right after smoking. His plan will promote the use of stairs instead of elevators in many public and government buildings including schools. This will be encouraged with newly installed signs as well as educational events to inspire people and young students. Also by using smart design strategies for all new construction and major renovations. The health department stated that more than half of adult New Yorkers are overweight or obese, as well as nearly 40 % of New York City’s public school students ( kindergarten to eighth grade). It’s estimated that obesity costs the city about $4 billion dollars a year in health care costs.

Our favorite baby sling is Moby Wrap sometimes called “the mother of all wraps” now also available in new UV-protected fabrics. The material is soft and comfortable for both mom and baby and the wrap provides good back support. Our favorite toddler carrier is Ergo Stowaway Travel Carrier which provides the same weight distribution as the traditional Ergo. It can also be folded easily into a self-contained travel pouch when not needed. And it only weighs a pound.
