  • Scientists develop battery made of wood: Many scientists have been experimenting with more environmentally friendly materials for battery technologies. One example is a battery made from the wood fibers of yellow pine trees, which was developed at the University of Maryland.
  • First net-zero energy school to open in New York: An elementary school on Staten Island will be the first net-zero energy school in the Northeast, and one of the few in the world. It is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
  • Hydroponic rooftop greenhouses in New York City: Gotham Greens located in Greenpoint Brooklyn is the first commercial-scale rooftop hydroponic farm in New York City, producing up to 30 tons of fresh produce annually.
