Pesticide Exposure Increases Risk of Autism

  • Pesticide exposure increases risk of Autism: According to a recent survey analysis prepared by CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the Health Resources and Services Administration, the likelihood of a school-age child to be diagnosed with autism, Asperger or a related developmental disorder has increased by 72 percent between 2007 and 2013. Now a new study from researchers at the University of California Davis suggests that pregnant women living in proximity to agricultural fields treated with pesticides are at higher risk of having a child with autism. The study evaluated data from the California Pesticide Use Report indicating type and location of pesticides used, together with addresses of about thousand participants in a Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment study. The subject area was primarily in the Sacramento vicinity, a region rich with agriculture. The researchers focused on four groups of pesticides commonly used in the Sacramento Valley, including organophosphates, organochlorines, pyrethroids and carbamates. Already a similar study published in 2007 found that children born to mothers exposed to two organochlorine pesticides during their first trimester of pregnancy were six times more likely to develop autism than mothers not exposed to this pesticide. As researchers note: “While there is currently no known cause of autism, a large number of widely used agricultural pesticides have known neurologic effects, making more research on the connection between pesticides and autism even more important.”
