  • Sleep cleans the trash from our brain:  A recent study suggests that sleep serves another critical function to our body and that is ensuring metabolic homeostasis or regular maintenance and clearance of our brain. As the scientists explain: “The restorative function of sleep may be a consequence of the enhanced removal of potentially neurotoxic waste products that accumulate in the awake central nervous system. This finding suggests a mechanistic explanation for how sleep serves a restorative function, in addition to its well-described effects on memory consolidation.”
  • Discrimination of pregnant women is still happening: Thirty five years ago in 1978 the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) was born as an amendment to the Civil Rights Act. It outlawed workplace discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions and applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including both state and local governments. However, workplace discrimination of pregnant women is still taking place around the country and relates to hiring, firing, training, promotions, disability leave and all other aspects of employment. As a result, pregnancy discrimination claims have risen 35 percent over the last decade, and unfortunately the PDA’s power to protect pregnant women has proven to be very limited.
